Torguard review and features, perfect for torrent downloads

07-Jun-2019

Torguard is a VPN service that focuses on Bittorrent downloaders. They do this by, among other things, offering Socks5 proxies and allowing Torrent downloads on all servers. For example, they have a tool on the website that checks if your ip address is really hidden, this can be checked by downloading a torrent from them, and VPN connections to Torguard can be established using various protocols. OpenVPN, L2TP, PPTP and IPsec are supported by this VPN service and the service itself indicates that they do not keep any logs of their users at all. Ideal for people who want to use a VPN service for privacy, which torrent downloaders want anyway, read below for a comprehensive review of Torguard. You will find out what our experience with this VPN is during our extensive testing.Torguard has over 3000 distributed over 55 countries. This is quite a number of servers in quite a few countries compared to other VPN services. What surprised us positively during this review is that the service also has servers in countries where other providers do not allow you to use servers. For example Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Vietnam and a number of other countries it is possible to purchase a dedicated IP address from Torguard. This is interesting for people who need to whitelist their IP addresses to access certain services online. This is also a very interesting option if you only want to open up your home network to certain IP addresses. Since 2018 Torguard has software for all known operating systems. Previously there was only a VPN software client available for Windows. They have now improved that and you can download a software client for iPhone (iOS), Android, Linux and Windows devices. With such a VPN client you can easily set up your VPN settings and connect to your VPN server of choice, Torguard's software for Windows is simple but effective. The design is simple and may be a bit outdated, but all the necessary features can be found in the software. You can easily choose which of the available protocols you want to use. Below is the Windows software which can be downloaded from the Torguard website and we have used this review. For MacOS there is also software which is very similar to the Windows version. Simple but the features you see on it all work fine and simple. A big flaw in MacOS application is the lack of a kill switch. On the Torguard website you can find an explanation on how to install a script that works as a kill switch, but of course that is far from ideala. As mentioned before, Torguard has recently also developed applications for iPhones, iPads and Android devices. Just like the Windows client, these apps are very basic, but simply work as they should. For Firefox and Chrome, Torguard has made a browser extension. With this extension for Chrome and add-on for Firefox it is possible to use or control VPN connections from within the browser. As the name suggests TorGuard was created with the bittorrent downloaders in mind, it is a real torrent VPN. This immediately means that privacy and security must be taken into account. After all, you don't want parties to be able to see torrent content being downloaded or uploaded from your ip address. We have created a special page that explains exactly what a VPN is and how it works, so the privacy measures can be called good. No logs are kept, neither of regular internet traffic nor of download traffic. The payment details are kept, but because there is the ability to pay with Bitcoin, it can be relatively anonymous and difficult to link to the client, and the technical aspect of security is good. The 256-AES or 128 bits are used. There are stronger encryptions, but this is more than enough for the downloader or internet user. Let's be honest, there is a large group of people who use the Bittorrent protocol to download content. This can be either legal or illegal. Either way, it's nobody else's business to understand what you're downloading; downloading anonymously is a right in our eyes. Torguard offers the standard VPN connection as well as special anonymous BitTorrent proxy for some packages. In the well-known Torrent clients (uTorrent, Vuze, etc) you can configure that you want to use these proxys . Your traffic will then be sent over 40 different servers and virtually impossible to trace back to you. For this review, Torguard downloaded an Ubuntu installation iso via torrent and this was very fast and easy.Below you can see how to set up Torguard bittorrent proxy at the different clients. We have performed several tests from different countries. You can find the quickest connection by connecting to the different servers and doing a speed test, as the name suggests, Torguard is very suitable for downloading from Bittorrent. As mentioned above, the service does not keep logs, and the torrent protocol over the servers is allowed, of course. The speed is also fine, which is of course very important when downloading and uploading, and Torguard also has the option of running your torrent traffic via a Socks5 proxy. With Torguard's Socks5 proxies, your download is regularly distributed over up to 200 ip's across 6 different countries, and Torguard tries to bypass VPN blocks in its own way. Some time ago Torguard decided that they are not going to constantly change the shared IP addresses. They have chosen to issue dedicated IP addresses to their users. You pay extra for this, but it is one of the most sustainable ways to watch American Netflix without being blocked again and again. Our experience with Torguard in combination with Netflix is that it doesn't always work, even with a dedicated IP address. Torguard's customer service couldn't help us with that either. This is actually very bad, especially when you consider that we paid for that extra IP address, so bypassing the Netflix VPN blockage with Torguard doesn't work (well). If you are looking for a VPN service that allows you to see the American Netflix in the Netherlands, ExpressVPN is a very similar service to other VPN providers. The pricing structure is also more or less the same: the longer you purchase a subscription, the lower the price of the subscription will be. For example, it is possible that if you take out a 1 year subscription, you will pay an amount of $4.99 per month. This is a high price for an average VPN service such as Torguard's. Below you can see a screenshot of the Torguard website with an overview of the prices. Besides the VPN service that is offered, there are also other services that are offered. For example, an anonymous proxy service and an anonymous mail service are also offered by the same company. You can request a dedicated IP for a considerable extra charge, so you will always be able to connect to a VPN server with the same IP address. This way you can whitelist an IP address of the service so that you can have access via a VPN connection in for example a server.Torguard seems to offer a really serious VPN service after major changes in recent months. They have purchased a large number of extra servers. There are also software and apps available for the most common operating systems. All this can be done with extra security through a firewall and SSH tunnels. During our review we tested all this and it all worked well. Besides that there is a no-log policy at the server. This also explains the name tor in the name of the service. They want to take maximum protection for those who download the Bittorrent protocol content for example.
