GOOSE VPN review, our experiences with this Dutch VPN!

09-Jan-2020

GOOSE VPN is a VPN service from Dutch soil, a truly Dutch product. This does not mean that there are only Dutch VPN servers or that it can only be used in the Netherlands. Also with this VPN you can connect to different VPN servers around the world and it works from anywhere as long as there is internet. GOOSE VPN focuses mainly on user-friendliness, or you can read about that in this GOOSE VPN review. In this review we test all the important features of a GOOSE VPN service. Think for example of the speed and stability of the connections. We also test the software on the various commonly used devices such as computers, laptops, tablets and smartphones. For this review we will also take a critical look at the privacy policy and the way in which GOOSE VPN indicates that it handles your data. To get an impression of GOOSE VPN you will see a video below, which GOOSE VPN has made itself. As mentioned above, GOOSE VPN has its head office in the Netherlands. The service has VPN servers around the world that can be used by GOOSE VPN customers for VPN connections. The countries where these servers are located differ a lot according to the customer service. At the time of writing there are at least 28 countries where a GOOSE VPN server can be found. Within these countries there are different locations that are used for GOOSE VPN servers. The number of servers is not that high, certainly not in comparison with VPN providers such as ExpressVPN, but for most people the servers in the countries where GOOSE VPN offers them are more than enough. In popular locations such as the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and America there are multiple servers to be found. This enables you to view geographically blocked content from these countries. It also means that there will always be a GOOSE VPN server available in the countries most visited by Dutch people. In practice this will mainly be connected to Dutch servers. This is because of the good speed if you want to use a VPN when you are in the Netherlands yourself. A VPN server that is geographically close is usually faster than a server that is far away. Of course, with your GOOSE VPN account you can use all the servers they have. It is clear that the number of GOOSE VPN customers grows regularly and they adapt their network accordingly. This simply means that GOOSE VPN needs to expand its server park as the customer base grows. There is free software for a number of different operating systems to download from the GOOSE VPN website. Software is available for Windows, MacOS, iOS (iPhone and iPad) and Android. For the most common devices and operating systems there is client software available for GOOSE VPN. Another big advantage of the apps and software of GOOSE VPN is that it is available in Dutch. There are few other VPN services where the software can be used in Dutch, for example ExpressVPN. We have tested the software for Windows and immediately noticed that it looks very neat and easy to use. After logging into the software you can easily connect to the server of your choice. There is also directly per server indicated whether p2p downloading and uploading is allowed on that server. In the screenshot below we have selected a server where downloading via torrent is allowed, as you can clearly see from the addition "P2P server" and you have direct insight into how much data you have used and how much you can still use via the VPN connection, this is really only interesting for people who choose a subscription with a data limit, there is also a simple settings menu where you can choose which protocol you want to use: IKEv2, L2TP, PPTP or OpenVPN. You can also choose to connect automatically as soon as the software starts, which is useful for people who always want to use a VPN to surf the Internet. Furthermore, there are not many settings to adjust. GOOSE VPN also focuses mainly on ease of use and the corresponding target group. In the screenshot above you can see the software if it is not yet connected. By simply clicking on the "slider" GOOSE VPN will connect to the server of your choice. In this screenshot we have selected a Dutch server on which P2P (peer to peer) is allowed. All in all the software for the laptop and computer works very easy and clear, it does exactly what it is supposed to do. GOOSE VPN has released an app for both Android and iOS (for the iPhone and iPad). With these apps you can easily connect to the GOOSE VPN servers. As with the software for laptops and computers, our experience with both apps during the review period is simply good. Everything works well and intuitively, when you open the app you will immediately know how it works. Below you can see a screenshot of the Android app from GOOSE VPN. The app for iPhone and iPad looks similar. Because GOOSE VPN uses the OpenVPN protocol it is also possible to connect with other software and devices to the GOOSE VPN servers. On the website of the VPN provider you will find clear instructions on how to set up GOOSE VPN connections on other devices as well. Think for example of manuals for the following devices: GOOSE VPN itself indicates that they do not keep logs of their users. This means that they do not keep track of what data you send and receive, for example, which websites you visit and which files you download. It is a real advantage of Goose VPN that no logs are kept. In our VPN reviews, it's always a plus when VPN services don't log their users. It's simply better for privacy when no data is logged, and technical security seems to be in order, so you can choose either OpenVPN or IKEv2. We almost always recommend using OpenVPN because its encryption is very strong and because it is open source. IKEv2 is not open source but the encryption is good. IKEv2 does have the advantage that it is easier to reconnect when a connection is lost, for example when you drive into a tunnel and lose your internet connection. The encryption used for the data is AES-256 Bit encryption. This is a very strong encryption. However, it is important to realise that GOOSE VPN operates from the Netherlands. The Netherlands belongs to the so-called "9 eyes surveillance alliance" countries. This means that data, if necessary forced, about a certain person or organisation must be shared with the other countries in this cooperation. This is by definition not good for the privacy of the user of GOOSE VPN. As indicated earlier, it is possible to choose in the software to connect automatically. You can have the client start up automatically when starting your device and you can also set up a VPN connection to a GOOSE VPN server. The kill switch is an option that ensures that all internet traffic is blocked should the VPN connection be lost. This function prevents accidental sending and receiving of sensitive data via the standard internet connection. GOOSE VPN has made this kill switch option available on Windows, MacOS and iOS. So if you use Android you don't have a kill switch, which is a pity, the speed is of course important when using a VPN service. For this review we tested the speed via a server in Amsterdam, which is the closest to the original connection, the download and upload speed via the GOOSE VPN server was a bit slower than the original connection. Where we reached 100 Mbits per second without a VPN connection we did with a VPN 78 Mbits. The upload went from 10 Mbits to 8 Mbits. These are for us acceptable speeds when you want to use a VPN for safe surfing and secure public wifi networks. If you want to download via VPN, we advise you to look for a faster VPN service. You will find the fastest VPN's on this page. The stability was pretty good during our review. During 2 days of testing we have suffered a number of lost connections. So with the connections and speed of GOOSE VPN we have varying experiences. These are 2 important properties of a VPN and this is a big disadvantage of GOOSE VPN.GOOSE VPN itself indicates on the website that they sometimes have overloaded servers. These overloaded servers can cause a slower connection. GOOSE will ask you to report this if this is the case and they will resolve this quickly. Nevertheless, we read more stories on the internet where people complain about the quality of the connections. In the software of GOOSE VPN you can clearly see on which servers p2p is or is not allowed . As soon as the servers get too busy GOOSE VPN will, according to the software, make more servers available to keep the speed high enough, so because downloading torrents is allowed, it is also possible to use GOOSE VPN with Popcorn Time. This makes it possible for people to hide their IP via a VPN connection from GOOSE VPN. Downloading via torrent or other p2p networks has been somewhat limited with GOOSE VPN to date. If you plan to download a lot, the cheapest package may be too limited, as you have a data limit of 50 gigabytes per month. With the more expensive package you do have unlimited data, which in itself is suitable as a torrent VPN. The speed does leave something to be desired. The costs for the use of GOOSE VPN have gone down the last few months after they first became more expensive again. They have slightly changed the entire pricing structure. There used to be a subscription with a data limit, but now they seem to have completely abandoned that. At the time of writing, it is possible to choose between a subscription of 2 years, 1 year or 1 month. At the time of writing you pay €2,99 per month for a subscription that you take out in 1 time for 2. When you subscribe for a year, the converted monthly price is €4,99 and when you want to renew per month you pay €12,99 per month. The price of €2,99 is a high price compared to other providers, you can for example use the better service Surfshark for a lower price. Below you can see the price overview of the different subscriptions, this is a screenshot of the website of GOOSE VPN. An advantage of GOOSE VPN is that the service is free to try for a month. You don't pay anything for the first month and that's good, because you get the full service. This way, you can easily find out whether GOOSE VPN suits you. At the end of the trial period, you can easily choose to stop the subscription or do nothing and thus retain the option of continuing to use GOOSE VPN. Many people use a VPN service so that they can view certain content in other countries. Think for example of RTL XL on holiday or Youtube movies whose content is not available in a certain country. When you connect to a server in the Netherlands, for example, you can also watch content from abroad on NPO broadcasts that can normally only be watched in the Netherlands. This also applies to videos that can normally only be watched in the United States, for example. With the GOOSE VPN service you can also watch this when you are in the Netherlands or another country than the United States.GOOSE VPN does not work with Netflix at the time of writing. When GOOSE VPN was still relatively small it worked fine to look over a VPN connection from GOOSE to Netflix. Lately however it has become clear that Netflix also knows how to distinguish the GOOSE VPN and therefore blocks it. GOOSE VPN tries to indicate on its own site that Netflix should look via GOOSE VPN, but this is not the case. GOOSE VPN is not a good Netflix VPN. Many people use a VPN to bypass geographical blocks in Kodi. For example, they want to use the Hulu add-on. When GOOSE VPN is connected you can simply open Kodi and Kodi's traffic will pass through the VPN connection. It is also possible to connect to a GOOSE VPN server with kodi's OpenVPN add-on. This means that GOOSE is suitable for kodi and possibly also for Openelec. We have a special page about Kodi with VPN where you can find more information about setting up a VPN connection in Kodi. In many countries outside the Netherlands you cannot watch the popular online broadcasts of Dutch broadcasters. For example Ziggo Go, KPN interactive TV and even the NPO app doesn't broadcast a lot abroad. With a VPN connection to a Dutch server of GOOSE VPN it is suddenly possible to watch the programmes that are normally blocked abroad. So with GOOSE VPN from abroad you can watch Ziggo Go, Uitzending Gemist and other apps you would like to see. Because the service is a Dutch company, the website, customer service and software are available in Dutch. This is of course ideal when your English is not so good. Besides that it is nice to use a VPN company from the Netherlands.GOOSE VPN is a VPN service with an easy and clear user interface. The quality of the VPN connections to the GOOSE VPN servers has proven to be a bit less during our review. The connections work but are slow and faltering at times. This is of course a big disadvantage when using a VPN service and the price for a GOOSE VPN subscription is average. It is true that you have much better alternatives for the same money. Examples include CyberGhost, Surfshark and NordVPN. We also like the fact that GOOSE VPN is a Dutch company. However, the quality is a bit disappointing, this is also apparent from various online reviews and our own experiences. If you like to use a Dutch company to surf anonymously then you can possibly choose GOOSE VPN.
